Mass Effect 2 is looking pretty epic in scope, and unfortunately BioWare just can't fit it onto one disc. The revelation came out on the BioWare forums, where community coordinator Chris Priestly stepped in with some details. Both the PC and Xbox 360 versions will have two discs, but the PC version will be a one-time install and then play off of one disc. The Xbox 360 version will require a disc swap, but Priestly claims "it occurs at a carefully planned place in the game (that does not interfere with gameplay) and is done once. You do not swap back and forth. 1 swap and then done."
Given the alternative of swapping back and forth for visiting different planets, one swap doesn't sound so bad. In the bigger picture, it does mean that standard DVDs are showing their age, as more games start to require multiple discs. Mass Effect 2 will be one of two high-profile Q1 RPGs that require more than one disc; the other, of course, is Final Fantasy XIII which may need three.
