Actors and sports stars love to be humble by saying they keep their most famous awards in their downstairs loos. But these awful prizes will be lucky to get a spot even there rather than in a cardboard box marked ‘junk’ in the garage.

With a container full of citrus fruits as his reward, it’s little wonder that teenage tennis player Gianni Mina struggled to crack a smile after winning the Orange Bowl tournament in Florida.

And the Chevron World Challenge golf trophy – hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation – seemed to have lost its lustre, like the golfing great himself.

Woods was due to compete in the event in California but at least his domestic meltdown meant there was no danger of him posing with the ludicrous orange tiger pawing the world in the shape of a golf ball.

Meanwhile, snooker star Ding Junhui, winner of the Pukka Pies UK Championship, was rewarded with 276 pastry treats. He is donating his prize to a homeless charity in Sheffield, where he lives.

‘The least I can do is try to help some of those less fortunate than me at Christmas by donating these pies – hopefully, there are enough to stop people going hungry,’ he said.

It’s not like actors have it any better, though. Even Johnny Depp could not make the oversized airport souvenir that is the career achievement award of the Bahamas International Film Festival look cool.

And Renee Zellweger looked less than impressed as she picked up her prize at the Hasty Pudding Awards annual Woman of the Year Parade in Massachusetts, in February.
