One of the largest lobsters ever caught in Britain is also one of the luckiest - after its captors took pity and released it back into the sea.

Simon Sharp and his wife Lizzy were amazed when this one-metre-long monster popped up in their nets off the coast of Dartmouth, Devon.

But, instead of turning the female crustacean into a trophy, they threw her back.

‘A claw that size could take your hand off, it was massive,’ said Mr Sharp, 42.

‘It was a great big barnacled old thing but it looked very old and sluggish so we decided it had to go back in. It was no good for eating, it would be as tough as old boots and we didn’t want to stockpot it either,’ he added.

Experts say the creature may be 100 years old and is the largest caught since a 20-pounder was landed off Fowey, Cornwall in 1931.

Mr Sharp, who didn’t have any scales, notched her tail so other fisherman cannot take it home.

The biggest lobster ever recorded was landed off Canada in 1977, weighing 20kg (44lb) and 1.06m long.
