Like many brainwaves, Dr Steve Fabes’s plan to cycle around the world came to him in the pub.

Most people would have dismissed the notion as a pipe dream after calculating it would take five years to cover the 50,000km (31,000-mile) route. But the challenge excited the 29-year-old and tomorrow he will be setting off on his epic journey.

‘I was sitting there with a mini-atlas in one hand and a pint in the other and thinking how long it would take to cycle each of the six continents,’ he said.

‘Since that pint, I’ve been planning this for the last two years.’

With mixed terrain ahead of him Dr Fabes has packed everything he needs to survive – from camping equipment down to the proverbial kitchen sink.

He will also be calling in on health centres supported by Merlin – an aid agency for which he hopes to raise £50,000.

‘This is the opportunity of a lifetime,’ he said. ‘Still, I am absolutely petrified and excited – in double measures.’

Olympic cycle champion Sir Chris Hoy said: ‘This will surely test Dr Fabes’s resolve and determination to the limit.’
