Cain Velasquez took a giant step to the top of the UFC heavyweight division after he needed only 2:20 to defeat former UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. A classy Velasquez wasted no time in thanking his opponent after the bout.
"I really want to thank Nogueira, I look up to him," Velasquez admitted after the bout.

Velasquez found himself dominating the fight with a well diversified stand up attack, as he came at Nogueira with with punches and kicks which kept him at bay.

"We were planning to push the pace wherever we could, stay on the outside, work the standup, and if there was an opportunity for a takedown, to take it," he admitted of his gameplan. "Just keep him off balance the whole time."

The finish of the bout saw both Noguiera and Velasquez go for a punch with Velasquez finding his mark a split second faster to send Nogueira crashing to the ground.

"I just tried to keep focused and when I got in a good position, I just tried to beat him to the punch."

Velasquez finds himself possibly in line for a title shot against UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. UFC President Dana White announced last month that Lesnar would defend his title this summer against the winner of the Frank Mir/Shane Carwin interim title match at UFC 111. If either Mir or Carwin is injured, Lesnar would then face Velasquez.
