LOS ANGELES: Filmmaker Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct the gangster odyssey Static.

The story centres on a wrongly imprisoned gangster who, with the help of his loyal posse, must make his way across town through crooked cops and rival gangs in order to testify against the dirty cops who put him away.

The project has been set up at Columbia Pictures since 2001, when it paid a $400,000 advance for Brad Gann's spec script, beating several rival studios. In the ensuing years, Stephen Kay (Get Carter) and Chris Robinson (ATL) have been attached to direct.

Ritchie is rewriting the script with Martin Askew.

Ritchie also wrote and directed Snatch and the ill-fated vehicle for his wife Madonna, Swept Away, for Columbia. His other credits include the critically acclaimed indie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and the Las Vegas-set crime caper Revolver.
