Britpop stars Supergrass have announced that they are splitting up after four summer shows.

The Oxford band confirmed in a statement earlier today that a string of gigs in June will be their final farewell to fans.

"Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years," said the group. "We still love each other but, cliché notwithstanding, musical differences have led to us moving on and of course we all wish each other well in the future."

Supergrass's final tour starts at Glasgow Barrowlands on June 8, before visiting Manchester's Academy and London's O2 Academy. Their last show will be at the Paris La Cigalle on June 11.

Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey, who previously performed under the name The Jennifers, joined with Mick Quinn in 1993 to form Theodore Supergrass. They dropped the 'Theodore' title because it was "a bit rubbish".

The band released six studio albums and a Best Of collection during their 18-year career. During the mid-90s they scored five consecutive Top 10 hits with tracks such as 'Alright', 'Going Out', 'Richard III' and 'Sun Hits The Sky'.
