Julie Benz will reportedly return for the upcoming fifth season of Dexter.
Benz's character Rita, who was married to Dexter (Michael C Hall), was murdered by the Trinity Killer in the last season finale.
However, Entertainment Weekly reports that Benz has signed up to play the role again in future episodes.
Executive producer Chip Johannessen explained that she will not be coming back from the dead and said: "We're not going to do some ghostly thing with her."
Fellow executive producer Sara Colleton added: "We reserve those for Harry [James Remar]. If you have too many things like that it becomes gimmicky."
A representative for the programme's network Showtime refused to reveal details about Benz's role but explained that Rita's return will "help Dexter deal with his newfound feelings of loss and grief - emotions he has never really felt before".
The fifth season of Dexter is scheduled to premiere in September.
