John Cleese has claimed that he is disappointed with the quality of programming on the BBC and ITV.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the comedian explained that the business side of the industry has taken over.

"From the '50s right through to the late '80s, the good people of Britain - and some of the others - were able to enjoy the least bad television in the world," he said.

"During these glorious days, the word 'quality' was still to be heard in planning meetings. This era came to a stumbling halt when ITV was handed over to hard-headed businessmen, and the BBC decided it was their duty to follow them downmarket."

Earlier this year, Sir Ian McKellen claimed that the standard of programming on television has slipped "catastrophically".
