The confirmation from Tony Woodley came as union members walked out on the last day of their series of five-day strikes.

There have now been 22 days of industrial action in a row over pay and conditions with airline bosses.

More strike action by cabin crew would spell misery for BA passengers.

The earliest possible strike date would fall at the end of July, the height of the busy holiday season.

The dispute is now the longest-running in recent aviation history.

"Brendan Barber from the TUC and we have tried to convene meetings with BA and Willie Walsh to resolve this dispute, but to no avail", explained Mr Woodley.

"This particular dispute is drifting. We'll review the situation as we prepare for another ballot."

The row is so far thought to have cost the airline more than £150m.

Derek Simpson, Unite's other general secretary, said the "silly" stumbling block to a resolution of the dispute remains the full reinstatement of staff travel concessions.

Cabin crew gathered at strike HQ in Bedfont to welcome London mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone.

Meanwhile, BA staff prepare to return to work to restore dented bank balances.

One striking cabin crew member, who wished to remain anonymous, explained: "These strikes have been crippling for many of us.

"Every time we walk out, we lose a day's pay. Multiply that by 22 days and that's a lot of money."

But the male member of staff also explained there is still a strong feeling of defiance among his colleagues and admitted he would be voting in favour of future strike action.
