A broken arm suffered in his recent May victory will sideline UFC heavyweight Mike Russow until January 2011.
Russow, who authored one of the best comeback moments in recent memory with a stunning third-round knockout of Todd Duffee after trailing most of the fight, had been expected to only miss six to eight weeks while healing.
Russow broke the ulna bone in his left arm, likely in the midst of blocking a Duffee kick in the first round of their encounter, which came at UFC 114. Russow is currently still in a cast, and the timeline for recovery and a return to the Octagon will take him into the new year, his manager Monte Cox told MMA Fighting.
Russow entered the fight as a major underdog. The previously unbeaten Duffee had been a 3-to-1 favorite, and he seemed on his way to proving the pudits right as he easily took the first two rounds on the judges' scorecards with superior standup. As the hulking, 24-year-old Duffee seemingly cruised to victory in round three, Russow caught him with a crushing overhand right that knocked him out midway through the round.
For his efforts, he won a $65,000 Knockout of the Night bonus, and now it appears he'll have plenty of time to spend it as he recovers.
The show of resilience boosted Russow to a 13-1 record with one no contest in his career. The Illinois fighter, who is also a full-time police officer in Chicago, is 2-0 in the UFC, with his other victory coming in a decision over Justin McCully.
