The funeral of fugitive gunman Raoul Moat will be held on Monday next week at a crematorium less than a mile from his Newcastle home.

A large police presence is expected for the event at the West Road Crematorium, Newcastle, according to sources.

His family has already said the former bouncer would be cremated to prevent unwelcome interest in his grave.

Moat shot himself in the head during a stand-off with officers in Rothbury, Northumberland, on July 10, after he had waged war on Northumbria Police.

The findings of a second post-mortem, due to be released in a fortnight, could challenge the account of his death.

The first examination, carried out the day after Moat died on the banks of the River Coquet, ruled a shot from his sawn-off shotgun had killed the 37-year-old.

But after seeing Moat's body for themselves and hearing that police marksmen fired Tasers at the same time as he died, the family paid £600 for the second examination, which was held last week.

Meanwhile, the funeral of his victim, Chris Brown, will take place in his own home town on Friday next week.

A notice placed in a local newspaper has asked mourners to wear bright clothing for the service to honour the former karate instructor at Slough Crematorium, Berkshire.

Moat shot Mr Brown and maimed his ex-lover Sam Stobbart in Birtley, Gateshead, a day before shooting PC David Rathband in Newcastle and heading on the run.

Northumbria Police will question a 21st person suspected of helping Moat while he evaded the authorities.

The 26-year-old man was arrested in Newcastle on Thursday on suspicion of assisting an offender.
