As many as 20 people may have died in Nigeria after a runaway truck crashed into dozens of vehicles and caught fire.
The brakes of the truck failed as it was coming down a slope, causing it to crash into dozens of vehicles waiting at a police checkpoint on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Other vehicles also crashed into the inferno as drivers panicked and lost control.
An official from the Lagos fire fighting department said nearly 20 passengers of a Toyota Urvan commercial mini bus, which the runaway truck smashed into, may have been killed and dozens of other people were injured.
In the ensuing chaos some commuters abandoned their vehicles and ran off, causing further traffic congestion lasting for several hours.
Fadipe Idowu: "We discovered that the vehicles had casualties inside, people were trapped. So with the assistance of the public we were able to rescue some of the victims out, although they sustained injuries, while some others were very unfortunate - they got trapped and were roasted."
