X-Box Live Fees going up

Starting November 1, Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are set to increase in price more than 20 percent across the board. Microsoft made the controversial announcement on Major Nelson's blog this morning.

"Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same," reads Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb's statement. "We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry."

Xbox 360 users in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and the U.K. will all be affected by the change in subscription fees. Annual rates in the U.S. are increasing from $49.99 to $59.99, with single-month and three-month subscriptions rising to $9.99 and $24.99, respectively. I feel bad for X-Box Live Users...

I'm a Live user, and I pay the $49.99 for the whole year. So to see this is a bit disappointing, especially considering that content such as Netflix you have to have a membership on top of Live in order to use it on Live. Not that I do, in fact I don't really use my XBOX for anything BUT gaming... so kinda getting screwed out of my dollars to play online.

The good thing, though, is that being a annual subscriber (I don't know if shorter length subscriptions are different), I get discounts on my renewal price. For example, the normal rate is $49.99 before the hike, my renewal rate is $39.99 for another whole year. I have yet to see if my discounts count after my next term is up.
