A DOCTOR died after becoming stuck in a chimney as she tried to force her way into her 'on-off boyfriend's' home, cops said today.
Dr Jacquelyn Kotarac, 49, had first tried to get into the house in Bakersfield, California, using a shovel.
When that failed she climbed up on the roof, removed the chimney cap and slid feet first down the flue.
Her decomposing body was found THREE days later.
The man who lives in the home is William Moodie, 58, believed to be her on-off boyfriend.
It is understood that as Dr Kotarac was trying to enter the house last Wednesday Mr Moodie was leaving "to avoid a confrontation".
Mr Moodie said: "She made an unbelievable error in judgment and nobody understands why, and unfortunately she's passed away.
"She had her issues - she had her demons - but I never lost my respect for her."
He did not deny his relationship with Dr Kotarac.
But he refused to comment on the circumstances that led to her death, saying it was more important to focus on the good she did in life.
Moodie, who runs an engineering consulting firm, said Dr Kotarac was superb at her job and worked for her patients for free.
Dr Kotarac apparently died in the chimney, but her body was not discovered until a house-sitter noticed a stench coming from the fireplace.
The house-sitter and her son investigated with a flashlight and found the doctor dead, wedged about two feet above the top of the fireplace opening.
Firefighters spent five hours last Saturday dismantling the chimney and flue to recover the body.
Dr Kotarac's colleagues reported her missing two days before her body was found.
Her cause of death is still unknown.
