A goat had to be put down after his horns were torn out in what an RSPCA inspector described as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty she had ever seen.

Sidney, a 19-year-old black pygmy goat, was found dripping in blood after he was attacked for no apparent reason.

His horns were pulled out and he had one dislocated leg and another broken in two places.

Deborah Bailey, co-owner of the Tennyson Horse and Pony Sanctuary in Middleton, Greater Manchester, where Sidney had lived for a decade, said he was considered a member of the family.

"It was my 13-year-old son that found him," she told Sky News.

"My 12-year-old daughter has taken it really badly, she has gone away to stay with her grandmother for a while.

"It is unbearable to think about. Sidney was basically tortured to death."

Mrs Bailey, who took Sidney in 10 years ago, said he had the run of the farm, but had a favourite spot where he spent the nights which was out of sight of the road.

"We have not a clue in the world why he was attacked, but someone would have had to know where he was.

"He would not have come out at night but would have gone to his little home under some trees where it is very dark."

The RSPCA is now hunting for the people who committed the "senseless" act.

Describing Sidney's injuries as one of the worst acts of animal cruelty she had ever seen, RSPCA inspector Caroline Hall said the kindest thing she could do for Sidney was to put him down.

"It was dreadful - Sidney had two huge caverns in his head where his horns had been ripped out and he was dripping in blood.

"Sidney has lived happily at the sanctuary for about 10 years and there doesn't seem to be any reason why anyone would attack him in this cruel way."

A fence was destroyed during the incident, which took place between 8pm on Thursday, August 26, and midday Friday, August 27, but no other animals were injured and nothing was stolen.

Ms Hall appealed to anyone with any information about the incident to contact the RSPCA.

"Those responsible for this dreadful attack would probably have gone home muddy and covered in blood," she said. "If you have any information at all about this incident, then please get in touch as soon as possible."

Mrs Bailey added: "We are praying to God someone comes forward."
