NEW YORK, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The trend of turning movies into musicals has producers are searching for funding for a Broadway rendition of the campy disco film "Xanadu."

Director Chris Ashley met with potential investors last week to pitch a stage production of the 1980 film -- which was much maligned at the time by critics -- the New York Post said.

With a first-rate cast and impressive script from "The Little Dog Who Laughed" writer Douglas Carter, the production reportedly could find its needed $2 million in funding to offer a rendition of the disco-era film.

"He embraced the inherent tackiness of the whole thing," a source told the Post of Carter's interpretation. "It was like going back to the 'Solid Gold' era."

The paper said that when the film musical starring Olivia Newton-John was released in 1980, it was lampooned by most critics -- with one going so far as to say it could be "the most dreadful, tasteless movie of the decade -- indeed, of all time."
