STEVE CORINO BASHES RUSSO & TALKS ECW ON THE LAST BWR
SHOW: The Final Edition of Barbaric Wrestling Radio
HOSTS: Brett Buchanan & The Sanman
DATE: August 10, 2006
RECAP WRITER: Brett Buchanan
The interview started out with Brett talking to Steve about baseball, Steve claimed that he is a Phillies and Cubs fan, so he’s a double loser, Brett said he’s an Angels fan, and Sanman said that he’s a Yankees fan. Steve said that Phillies All Star Ryan Howard is a good friend of his, and that Ryan is a big wrestling fan. Sanman thanked Steve personally for Bobby Abreau, Steve compared the Abreau trade to trading Steve Corino for Ric Flair. The subject then switched to wrestling, with The Sanman asking if Steve thinks that Zero 1 has gotten better or worse since Shinya Hashimoto’s death. Steve said that it’s definitely gotten worse, but it’s not awful. He said that Hashimoto was such a big star and would sell out the Tokyo Dome and when he died they lost the face of Zero 1.
Steve then talked about WWE’s ECW. He said he sees it as a brand extension in the WWE, and not as the actual ECW. He compared it to TNA, regarding them having the NWA Titles, but not really being the NWA. He also said the same thing about the new AWA. He called it a new generation. He said he hopes it succeeds for guys like CW Anderson, Shannon Moore, and Punk. He thinks that people should give it a chance. Brett asked how long it’ll last, Steve said that Vince doesn’t like to call quits, so it’ll probably take a lot for him to end it. Sanman then asked how long would Steve stay in ROH, Steve said he’s got a few shots, and that he’ll be in and out. He said that he had a great time last weekend just acting like a jerk, and not being the center of attention in his angle, due to Adam Pearce and Jim Cornette being with him. He said he looks forward to doing more with ROH this time around. Brett talked about how ROH fans seem to be sh**ting on him due to him actually having a personality, Steve said that he likes Adam because he works a very old school style and has a lot of charisma.
Brett then asked Steve if he thinks that Joey Styles contradicted himself by signing with the WWE, after bashing them forever on his website. Steve said “Absolutely.” But he said that Joey has a family, and contradiction is common in the wrestling business. He said that Dusty Rhodes always calls him a walking contradiction; he then went on to do a hilarious impression of The American Dream. Brett said he’s better than Matt Striker at impressions. Steve said that it’s good that Joey is getting to announce on a national platform, and that he’s glad he took the deal. Steve then went on to discuss World 1 and why the shows late last year were cancelled, and how frustrating and addictive it is to be a promoter. He said that they had a financial backer in place earlier this year, but that he got cold feet when he heard that ECW was coming back, so he pulled out.
Brett then asked if Steve was offered to wrestle at Hardcore Homecoming or One Night Stand. Steve said that he never got a direct offer from Hardcore Homecoming, but that he did get a secondhand feeler. He said that he was contacted for One Night Stand, but that he didn’t want to do it if there was no tomorrow, he claimed that he kicked himself a bit when he heard that the WWE were bringing it back, but that he doesn’t completely regret it. Steve claimed that he talked to Paul Heyman about coming in, and Paul said that he’d throw out his name, but that nothing ever materialized. Steve claimed that he did like to be a big fish in a small pond, and he likes making his own schedule.
Steve then talked about his “retirement” in 2001. He said that he never really got to retire, because Shinya Hashimoto and Nakumura encouraged him to join him in Japan. He said he’s always stayed in Japan because when no one else wanted him, Hashimoto and Nakumura had always been there for him. Brett then asked Steve about WCW, he said that right when he was confirmed, they basically were on death row. Steve then talked about TNA, saying that Bob Ryder called him and asked him to do the Gauntlet of the Gold, he said that the first time was a lot of fun. He said that when he came back in 2003 it sucked because Vince Russo was there, he stated that he can’t stand Vince Russo, and he doesn’t believe that he’s changed at all. Brett and Sanman then talked about how they had Russo on in 2005 and how he was out of his mind, Steve said that somewhere God is rolling his eyes saying, “Wow how did I get this guy in my club?” He said that he tried to avoid Russo at all costs in TNA. Steve said this about Russo, “You know how you know Vince Russo is lying? He’s talking.” He also said that he would love to comeback to TNA and work with Abyss.
Brett asked Steve about working with Eric Garguilo in the early days of ROH, he said it was great, but once Donny B. replaced Eric there was no chemistry, so he told Gabe that he couldn’t do it anymore. Steve said that Eric doesn’t get the credibility that he deserves. Steve also talked about Paul Heyman, stating that “he could sell ice to an Eskimo.” He said that Paul will tell you everything that you want to hear.
Steve then told a very unique road story, he said that it’s one he rarely tells, and he said that he had just talked to CW Anderson online, and it reminded him of it. He said that once during ECW’s run they stayed at the Remadda Inn in Atlanta. He said that it was always the same manager there, and that she was older than Terry Funk and Mr. Wrestling 1. He said that it used to be him, CW Anderson, Jack Victory, and Lou E. Dangerously who would room together, but that they would have a “don’t crap in the room rule” mainly due to Jack Victory. He said one night CW really had to crap one night, but that Steve said it was against their rules, so CW Anderson saw another room door open, and he went in. I won’t give away the ending of the story, you’ll have to listen to find out, it’s hilarious, let’s just say it’s a smelly ending. Brett then said that Steve sounded a lot like Raven and had a similar personality (Raven was on BWR last year), Steve said that he’s made fun of Raven so much that he’s starting to sound like him. Near the end of the interview Brett did word association, in regards to UXW promoter Frank Goodman, Steve said that he likes “Frank Goodberg,” but he said that his shows are horrible, and that he hates working UXW shows, he said that he’d rather get kicked in the tooth every day then work UXW, but he always seems to accept Frank’s booking. He said that the shows last for 17 hours, and that by the time he gets out there, nobody gives two sh**s about him. Steve said the worst part is that “Frank Goodstein” makes money off of his shows. Steve cracked a lot of good jokes about UXW during the rant.
Steve also discussed Terry Funk, Major League Wrestling, Court Bauer, holding the ECW Title, Aaron Aguilera, The Sandman, Jerry Lynn’s obsession with death metal, RVD and Sabu’s arrest, the AWA and more in this 50 minute classic interview on the final BWR!
