MUMBAI: A gun being handled by a security guard at the bungalow of India's top film star, Shah Rukh Khan, apparently went off accidentally, killing another guard, police said.

The guards, belonging to a private security agency, were on duty at Khan's house overlooking the Arabian Sea in Mumbai's Bandra suburb when the incident occurred.

It was not immediately known if the hugely popular 40-year-old actor was at home at the time.

"It was apparently an accident. An investigation is on," said police officer V.K. Choubey, adding that the two guards were handling a new firearm.

The firing, in the early hours of Tuesday, spread panic in the upmarket area and people rushed out of their homes, residents said.

Security has been tight in India's financial hub of Mumbai after at least 186 people were killed and over 700 wounded when bombs went off on packed trains and stations on July 11. Police suspect Islamist militants to be behind the attacks.

Obviously not... I know a few other places that could put safe gun handling in their manuals
