Two men arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a 27-year-old woman are being questioned by police.

The victim, who has not been named, was found seriously injured in a VW Passat car in Woodfield Road, Crawley, West Sussex, just after 6pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics were unable to save her and she was declared dead just under an hour later. Her body was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

Two men, aged 30 and 51, both from Crawley, were arrested at the scene and are being held in custody in the town, Sussex Police said. They are known to the victim.

An investigation is being led by detectives from the force's major crime branch, who are trying to establish where the woman sustained the injuries that led to her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Curry said: "This is a very tragic incident that has obviously reverberated around this close community.

"However, the three people involved - the victim and the two suspects currently in custody - are known to each other and the incident would appear to have been contained to them and their immediate surroundings.

"We therefore believe that there is no threat posed to the wider community by this sad occurrence and Sussex Police is now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this lady's death."

Police said forensic teams had combed the car the woman was found in for evidence, as well as a house in Woodfield Road.

A knife which was found in the car was also examined to establish whether it was used in the assault.
