Alesha Dixon has revealed how her mother was a victim of domestic abuse.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge speaks out in BBC One's Don't Hit My Mum on Monday night. In it,The Mirror claims an emotional Dixon reveals how her mother Beverley was abused by an unnamed boyfriend.

"I remember my mum crying and running out the house. My brother and I got pushed back. I remember thinking 'run for your life'," she said.

"He caught her and we saw him start to attack her in front of us. That is my worst memory. That is an image I've always carried."

Discussing how the events - which occurred when she was eight or nine - had affected her, she continued: "I don't remember any harmony or fun times. When you're young and you see your mum being abused you feel helpless and weak.

"I was scared of everything, scared to get a train to London, scared to pick up the phone. I wonder if it comes from not having a sense of security as a child."

The 32-year-old added: "It is something I've had to work on and I believe I've got to a point where I am now, I would say, fearless."
