The executive producer of The Vampire Diaries has revealed details of upcoming love triangles on the show.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Julie Plec explained that the romantic storylines will start to feature more in the series.

"We've kind of set a lot of these little triangles in motion," she said. "So the next episode... really gets us deep into all the triangles in the show."

Plec explained that it felt "right" when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) confessed his love for Elena (Nina Dobrev) before erasing her memory.

"We felt like it was exactly the right time given the journey that he had just experienced with his brother when Stefan made a very profound admission," she said. "It was time for Damon to make an admission of his own."

She added that the friendship between Elena and Damon is not fully restored yet, saying: "I think that Elena, given that she doesn't know that he said that, there's still a little bit more growth for Elena to return fully to friendship with Damon. But that path is set definitely."

Plec also suggested that the romantic storyline between Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) is not over.

"Jeremy kind of does something in the next week episode to let his feelings be known in a very dramatic and risky way," she said. "His actions make his feelings clear."
