A search is under way for two missing men after a small boat carrying six people capsized on the River Thames in Surrey.

Rescuers were called after the vessel overturned near Shepperton, at around 7.30pm yesterday.

The boat was ferrying passengers from Pharoah's Island, an exclusive residents' island near Shepperton Lock.

Sky reporter Simon Newton who is at the scene said: "They left the island to come to this side and during the course of their journey, about 100 yards or so, the boat capsized and the occupants fell into the water.

"The search operation last night involved some people on the island helping police and fire and rescue services, but still there is no sight of them."

The missing men are thought to be aged 66 and 70.

The four rescued people - three women and one man - were taken to hospital with minor injuries, emergency services said.

A helicopter and police divers were called in to help search for the missing pair.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: "At around 7.30pm yesterday, Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service attended the River Thames near Shepperton where a small boat had capsized.

"Extensive searches were started immediately, including the use of the police helicopter but there was no trace of the two missing people."

Newton said police resumed their search this morning.

He added: "It does seem, sadly, that this is changing from a rescue operation to a recovery one."
