Since announcing that it was cutting the data allowance of of its mobile phone contracts to 500MB, for all customers - old and new - there has been somewhat of a fuss kicked up online (and rightfully so).
But now, and to avoid the PR botch being turned into a full scale PR disaster, the mobile network has back tracked, issuing a statement saying that existing customers will now not be affected. Good news for those people sold 1GB and 3GB deals.
"On Monday 10th January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers," said Lysa Hardy, VP, T-Mobile UK.
"Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1st February, to new and upgrading customers only - not existing customers. There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the FUP is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users."
It's a wise step by T-Mobile, but the damage may have already been done. No doubt there will be a lot of existing customers having a think about their options when it comes to renewal time than there would have been.
