To date the only Final Fantasy game to be a direct, numbered sequel to a prior installment was Final Fantasy X-2. This may soon become more than just a single anomaly, though, as Square Enix has registered a web domain for Final Fantasy XIII-2.
The domain registration, like all domain registrations in the gaming industry, was spotted by Supererogatory. It's specifically for "finalfantasy13-2game.com," and was made by a company that has registered website domains for Square Enix in the past. There is of course always the chance that Square Enix is nabbing the domain simply to protect it, though, so this isn't exactly official confirmation of a new game yet.
Square Enix already has a couple of other Final Fantasy XIII related games in the work, all part of what they call the Fabula Nova Crystalis project. The other games in the project are Final Fantasy Versus XIII for the PS3 and Final Fantasy Agito XIII for the PSP, neither of which have a release date yet.
