SYDNEY: An Australian rules football player was in serious condition after having a kidney removed following an horrific on-field accident, officials said yesterday.

Geelong player Tom Lonergan suffered a cut to his kidney during a contest for the ball in Saturday's AFL match against Melbourne and was taken to hospital.

Club officials said Lonergan, 22, had been in a stable condition in an intensive care unit overnight but his blood pressure dropped and his pulse rose early on Sunday.

He was rushed into surgery and had his right kidney removed, and also received multiple units of blood, Geelong said.

"Tom remains in a stable but serious condition and is expected to have further surgery this week," Geelong said in a statement.

Sports medicine expert Dr Peter Breukner said Lonergan would not be able to exercise for about three months.

"He's lost a lot of blood so he'll be a pretty unwell boy for a few days yet until they get more blood transfused into him and that really knocks you around, so he'll be quite unwell for a couple of weeks," Breukner said.
