Japan's Prince Akishino, the second son of Emperor Akihito, visited with children suffering with cancer, on the fifth day of his visit to Costa Rica.

The prince and his wife, Princess Kiko, visited the National Children's Hospital and met with the facility director Orlando Urroz, who later told AFP the visit filled with him and his staff "with pride."

Prince Akishino earlier this week met with President Laura Chinchilla, who told reporters Japan was the fourth most important donor nation to Costa Rica and one that keenly understands its efforts in protecting the environment.

The visit marks 75 years of ties between Japan and Costa Rica.

The prince and his wife earlier paid a visit to the National Biodiversity Institute.

The Japanese royals are also expected to visit a livestock center and the Popular Culture Museum during their stay.
