LONDON: Three's-a-crowd comedy You, Me and Dupree shot straight to the top of the box office in its opening weekend, knocking cult shocker Snakes on a Plane down to second spot after only a week.

Starring Owen Wilson as the perpetual bachelor intruding on the newly wed bliss of Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon, Dupree defied a cool reception from the critics to rake in £1.6 million.

Third, unchanged from last week, was Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which has now taken nearly £50 million during its eight weeks in the charts, according to Screen International on Wednesday.

Fourth, down two places, was Disney/Pixar's Cars and fifth, down one, was another animated Summer success, Monster House.

At six, down from five, was John Tucker Must Die, in which three alpha females from different cliques discover they have all been dating the college stud and decide to seek revenge.

New at seven was blood-spattered British comedy horror Severance, featuring a team of weapons salesmen fighting off crazed renegade soldiers in the mountains of eastern Europe.

One place below was another newcomer, the highly acclaimed Volver.

Starring Penelope Cruz, this latest offering from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is a surreal comedy telling the tales of three generations of women in a working class area of Madrid.

It pushed the remake of 1980s cocaine cops series Miami Vice down to nine from seven, one place above wrestling comedy Nacho Libre in 10th spot.
