The New Zealand woman seriously injured when a gunman opened fire on a group of tourists in the Jordanian capital of Amman yesterday has undergone surgery, Prime Minister Helen Clark said today. The gunman killed a British man and wounded six other people in the group.

Three other New Zealanders who were part of the group were not injured.

Miss Clark expressed her deep concern.

"This attack, on a group of tourists visiting a Roman amphitheatre in central Amman, is very worrying and my thoughts are with the injured New Zealander and all others caught up in this dreadful attack," she said in a statement.

Miss Clark said the families of all the New Zealanders involved had been notified.

"New Zealand has an honorary consul in Amman. His staff are working with officials from the British Embassy to provide assistance and support to the injured New Zealander and the other New Zealanders involved," she said.

"The Jordanian Government has expressed deep sorrow at the incident, which is now under investigation."
