ENGAGED: Emilio Estevez kisses Sonja Magdevski at the Venice Film Festival
LOS ANGELES: Actor-director Emilio Estevez is engaged to marry his girlfriend of two years, a writer who also landed a bit part in his latest movie, the star told People magazine.

Estevez, 44, the eldest son of actor Martin Sheen and older brother of television star Charlie Sheen, says he and fiancee Sonja Magdevski had not yet set a wedding date.

"Don't know yet. Gotta get through this," he told People while attending the Venice film festival for the premiere of his upcoming film Bobby, about Robert F Kennedy's 1968 assassination.

Estevez wrote, directed and starred in the film.

Estevez said he and Magdevski, a writer whose articles have appeared in the online publication Malibu Magazine, became engaged during the Christmas holidays after about a year and a half of courtship.

Magdevski, who was in Venice with Estevez, has a single line in the film.

"My sister was supposed to do the part, but she had a conflict with wardrobe," People's website quoted Estevez as saying. "So I said to Sonja, 'Get in wardrobe. Get in makeup'."

The film features an all-star cast that includes Lindsay Lohan, Christian Slater, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, William H Macy, the director's father, and fellow "brat pack" co-star Demi Moore, to whom Estevez was once briefly engaged.

Estevez was previously married to singer-dancer Paula Abdul, years before she became a judge on American Idol. Their two-year union ended in divorce in 1994. He also has two grown children from a relationship in the 1980s with model Carey Salley.
