Hotel heiress Paris Hilton's claim that she had just one drink before being arrested for drink driving has been rubbished by experts.

The Simple Life star claimed she had drunk just one margarita and she only failed sobriety tests because she was tired and hungry. But experts say her claims are unbelievable given her reading of .08 on a breath test.

"She had more than one drink," said Dr. Mel Goldstein, professor of health professions and family studies at Hofstra University in the US.

"For a woman of her weight and size, it would have required three or four drinks."

After the arrest, Hilton told an LA radio audience that she was "starving because I had not ate all day" and conceded she may have been "speeding a little bit" in her Mercedes-Benz SLR.

But one drink typically isn't enough to make you drunk. A woman weighing 90 pounds would have a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 after one drink, according to the Web site of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

"Not eating increases your probability in terms of your blood-alcohol content," Goldstein said.

"It's usually better to have some food in your stomach so the alcohol is absorbed."

However, the notion that eating before drinking will keep you from getting drunk is an urban legend.

"It's more mythology than factual," he said. "It doesn't help too much."
