ELLATOR 84 RESULTS: HELD-JANSEN CANCELLATION OVERSHADOWS VOLKOV TITLE WIN
BY DEREK BOLENDER ON DEC 15, 2012 AT 12:15 AM ET

HAMMOND, Ind. – For the second straight week, Bellator faced the cancellation of a tournament final on fight night.

The lightweight-tourney final between Marcin Held (15-2 MMA, 4-1 BFC) and Dave Jansen (18-2 MMA, 5-0 BFC) was not allowed to proceed. The Indiana Gaming Commission cited Held's age (20) as the reason he could fight in the casino venue.

Bellator 84 took place at The Venue at Horseshoe Hammond Casino in Hammond, Ind. Main-card fights aired on MTV2 following Spike.com prelims.

One week ago at Bellator 83, it was the featherweight-tourney final between Rad Martinez (14-2 MMA, 4-0 BFC) and Shahbulat Shamhalaev (11-1-1 MMA, 2-0 BFC) that was removed from the card just prior to the fight due to Shamhalaev's backstage vomiting.

Both matchups will be rescheduled for Season 8 in early 2013.

Bad luck was the name of the game as Bellator wrapped up its seventh season and crowned a new heavyweight champion in the process.

Volkov edges Hale in lackluster title affair

In a clash for the Bellator heavyweight crown vacated by the retired Cole Konrad, Rich Hale and Alexander Volkov stood toe-to-toe for the better part of 25 minutes. However, it was Volkov who walked away with the unanimous-decision win via 49-46 scores.

The opening round began with both fighters feeling out each other before Volkov was able to secure a takedown. He did minor damage, and the pair eventually stood. Hale was able to land an overhand right and drop Volko, but the Russian sprung back up and was able to recover well.

The second frame saw another Volkov takedown, but he again did little damage. A sharp right-handed counter from Hale and a high left kick from Volkov were the only significant strikes in the round.

Volkov really took control of the bout in the third and fourth rounds. He took advantage of his reach and established his jab. He bloodied Hale's face in the third at range and stuck him in the fourth when he attempted to adjust and come inside.

Hale showed a sense of urgency as the final stanza began, and he pressed forward and looked to land a combination in close. However, Volkov avoided any real damage and went back to his jab and was able to continuous circle out of danger until the final bell.

The win moves the newly crowned champion Volkov (19-3 MMA, 3-0 BFC) to a perfect 3-0 in Bellator while Hale (21-5-1 MMA, 6-2 BFC) drops his first bout since moving up to heavyweight.

Herrig cruises to one-sided decision in rematch

Felice Herrig used her superior striking and offensive grappling to earn the nod in a rematch against late replacement Patricia Vidonic.

The pair fought back in April with Herrig earning the unanimous-decision win. When Herrig's original opponent, Michelle Gutierrez, pulled out citing an injury, Vidonic stepped in to face the Team Curran product.

Despite Vidonic's constant forward motion and pressure throughout the 15-minute bout, Herrig was able to land clean punches moving backward, and she punished her opponent when locked in the clinch position. Her wrestling and top control were also effective in each of the three stanzas, and helped her control the contest in between striking exchanges. The full repertoire was on display.

"I felt like it was my night," Herrig said. "The stars were aligned. Everything was in my favor."

Herrig (8-4 MMA, 2-0 BFC) ups her undefeated record to 2-0 under the Bellator banner, and she's now won five of her past six bouts. Meanwhile, Vidonic (7-4 MMA, 0-1 BFC) drops her promotional debut.
