Manchester United are set to sign Frank Lampard in the summer according to the latest reports in national newspapers.

Sir Alex Ferguson could sign Frank Lampard for absolutely nothing after the end of the Premier League season.

Ferguson was reportedly offered the player last January but turned the deal down owing to the fee and the fact Paul Scholes had come out of retirement.

Considering that Scholes and Ryan Giggs are going to hang up their boots at the end of the summer, Lampard would be an almost perfect substitute for their quality and their experience.

United have been linked with a variety of top quality midfield players in recent weeks with some carrying huge transfer fees that don’t justify their quality.

Therefore, the chance to bring in a player as good as Lampard is something that Ferguson may find very difficult to turn down, especially looking at Scholes and Giggs as proof that Lampard could play at the top level for at least another three seasons.

In an ideal world Lampard would be given the chance of staying on at Chelsea but their owner roman Abramovich seems intent of pushing him out of the club and welcoming in a new era.

In terms of convincing Lampard to join United, there shouldn’t be too much difficulty.

United are in a strong position where they could pay Lampard a competitive wage packet and he may prefer a move inside England to uprooting his close friends and family and moving to another country such as the USA, Russia or China.

He may also be tempted by the chance to work with Sir Alex Ferguson who has proven throughout his career that he can get the best out of players whether they are at the end of their career or the very beginning.

It would also be beneficial for United because they would have a chance to bathe in Lampard’s experience, experience which should be dished out at Chelsea but the owner doesn’t look like he’ll let that happen.

This will help with United’s transition from one team to the next and if Lampard is successful in a short spell at United, they may try and retain his services in some capacity after he has retired.

In simple terms, it’s a no brainer.

Is Lampard the right man for Fergie? Does this mean United won’t spend a penny in the summer?

No way haha. I doubt this will happen. Remember United tried to sign Drogs when he left. Chelsea aren't Arsenal. There's loyalty in guys like Drogba and Lampard.

exactly I'm gonna be honest if Lampard goes to another team within the premier league, I'm hoping it is West Ham only because that is were he came from and since Joe Cole is back with them it would be like old times when they both came to Chelsea from there it would be fitting for them to play together again especially if it is were they were discovered
