A temporary glitch in the social network's system rerouted people from other sites to a Facebook error message.

Facebook had a temporary glitch this afternoon that pulled people from different Web sites to a Facebook error message when they tried to access an account that was linked to the social networking site.

TNW's Alex Wilhelm first tweeted about this at 4:15 p.m. after trying to read an article from a news site: "Reading article. Dragged from two diff sites to Facebook, which displays what appears to be a permissions error. Wa?"

The issue, which was related to Facebook Connect, was resolved around 4:40 p.m.

Facebook issued this statement shortly after, saying it was a bug, but did not elaborate further:

"For a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third party sites to Facebook.com. The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual."

This means if you logged into other sites using your Facebook account -- a feature Facebook likes to highlight constantly -- then you would get rerouted to Facebook's site and an error message that read "An error occurred. Please try again later."

The only way to stop it was to log out of Facebook. This shows how widespread Facebook Connect is and how easily one site can cause the Internet to come screeching to a halt.

Facebook Is Not Closing For Maintenance Feb. 29 To 31: Care To Guess Why?

Facebook users, repeat after us: “30 days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31, excepting February alone, and that has 28 days clear, and 29 in each leap year.” Keep that traditional limerick in mind if you receive a message on the social network saying that Facebook will be closed for maintenance from Feb. 29 through 31.

Sophos’ Naked Security blog reported that messages have been spreading over the social network claiming that it will be shut down during those nonexistent days, and unobservant users have been sharing them as fact.

According to Naked Security, most of the messages are in French, but an English version is also making the rounds, and it reads (unedited):

WARNING!! Facebook will be closed for maintenance from February 29th to 31st!! Facebook wants YOU to Share this message with at least 15 of your friends for the best chance of alerting everyone. Many people will try to log in from February 29 to 31, just to find the site closed down for those days with no warning

According to Naked Security, there is no evidence that the messages contain any risk of malware, with the biggest issues being wasting users’ time and subjecting those who pass the message along to ridicule for not suspecting something fishy upon seeing the date Feb. 31.

Readers: Have you seen any of these messages?
