An LAPD official confirmed to Los Angeles television station KTLA that a body found inside the cabin is that of the suspected quadruple-murderer.

A single gunshot was heard inside the building after it caught fire when police shot tear gun canisters inside.

Earlier today, a policeman was fatally shot and another seriously injured in a fierce gunfight as authorities cornered the cabin.

Explosions and ammunition have also recently been heard coming from inside the cabin, Fox 11 reports.

The shootout and chase happened earlier today at Big Bear, a resort area in southern California.

Dorner, an ex-LAPD officer and triple-murder suspect, allegedly tied up a couple at their home and stole their four-wheel drive.

One managed to escape and alert authorities.

Local wildlife wardens were the first to spot the stolen vehicle and try to stop it.

The driver, believed to be Dorner, fled on foot into nearby woods and gunfire was exchanged, according to reports.

Hours later police had found the 33-year-old in a cabin and exchanged more gunfire.

Police did not say what weapons Dorner was using but did confirm he was launching smoke grenades.

Dorner has previously vowed not to be taken alive.

He is accused of killing a retired captain's daughter and her fiance on February 3, and a police officer on February 7, as part of a supposed revenge plot for unfair dismissal.

Ever since his burned-out truck was found in Big Bear last week, dozens of officers have been combing the mountain, searching door-to-door.

The body of fugitive ex-policeman Christopher Dorner has not been recovered, despite reports to the contrary, Los Angeles police have said.

The police chief of Riverside County told the Press-Enterprise this afternoon that the body of the suspected quadruple murderer was found inside a burnt-out cabin.

But Los Angeles Police Department commander Andrew Smith denied the claim, saying no body has been recovered and the cabin remains too hot for officers to enter.

A single gunshot was heard inside the building after it caught fire when police shot tear gun canisters inside.

Earlier today, a policeman was fatally shot and another seriously injured in a fierce gunfight as authorities cornered the cabin.
