2K Sports and WWE Inc. have agreed to a multi-year deal to produce WWE games, the two companies announced today. The first game created under this agreement, WWE 14, will be available this fall.

News of the companies' deal first broke last week when court papers from THQ were released. THQ, the former publisher of the WWE series, went bankrupt in December. They relinquished the WWE license to 2K's parent Take-Two, and in exchange developer Yuke's and WWE Inc. agreed not to sue the pants off them for breaking their contract.

Part of the reason the WWE game series will continue without interruption is that Take-Two opted not to switch developers. Yuke's will serve as developer as WWE 14. The Osaka, Japan-based studio has been developing WWE games since 1999, when the wrestling organization was known as WWF.

2K didn't say much about WWE 14 itself. They noted that it would combine their "commitment to authenticity" with the "signature gameplay" of the series. We shouldn't expect anything radically different from previous WWE games, then.

Today's press release says that WWE 14 is in development for "consoles." They're presumably avoiding specifics because the next Xbox and PlayStation are expected to launch in the fall as well. WWE 14 could therefore be available on both next-gen and current-gen platforms.
