UNCONFIRMED: 'El Chapo' has died in a shootout

Guatemalan authorities suspect the world's most powerful drug lord, Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzman, has been killed in a reported gun battle between drug gangs, according to Huffington Post, Yahoo and other news outlets.

Authorities launched a search Friday after Guatemalan residents reported a shootout and said one of the two dead men resembled Guzman.

However, there has been no confirmation that the shooting happened and no bodies have been found, according to Guatemalan officials.

"We have to wait for all the technical information in order to determine if, in fact, one of the dead is of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman," government spokesman Francisco Cuevas told Guatevision Television, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

Yahoo reports that Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla said government planes were flying over the rural area where the reported confrontation occurred. Officials also sent out police and soldiers to search on foot.

Public Enemy No. 1

Last week, Guzman was named Chicago's Public Enemy No 1. That title hasn’t been given to any criminal since Al Capone.

"What Al Capone was to beer and whiskey during Prohibition, Guzman is to narcotics," said Art Bilek, the Chicago Crime Commission's executive vice president. "Of the two, Guzman is by far the greater threat. ... And he has more power and financial capability than Capone ever dreamed of."

Guzman escaped in a laundry truck from a Mexican prison in 2001 and has been on the run ever since. The Daily Mail reports there has been a $7 million bounty on his head since then.

Forbes has named him one of the world’s most powerful people, with a net worth of $1 billion.
