A 10-cent minimum wager produced a whopping windfall of nearly $3.6 million Friday at Gulfstream Park.
The Rainbow 6 is a variation of horse racing's Pick Six wager. It not only requires a bettor to pick the winner of six straight races on the card but to be the only one to pick all six in order to take down the full jackpot.
The "unique ticket" requirement turned the 10-cent play into an exceedingly difficult bet to hit, allowing the jackpot to grow to lottery-like proportion. A series of six straight long-shot winners Friday ensured only one ticket had the right combination.
The parade of long shots began with a $114 payoff in Gulfstream's fifth race, the first leg of the Rainbow 6. Keynor Veloz won a maiden claiming race at 56-1 odds. That was followed by long-shot wins from Original Cast ($11.40), Odalys Halo ($36.80), Artie's Jasper ($17.20), Maystreasuretrove ($23.60) and Feline Forum ($23).
The 1-9-8-6-4-7 combination produced a winning payoff of $3,591.245.44. The jackpot had been growing with no single winners since Dec. 28, Daily Racing Form reported.
Though bettors can take a crack at the Rainbow 6 for 10 cents, that minimum would allow them to select only one horse in each race. Bettors instead often select multiple horses in each race, which increases the cost of the wager. The winning ticket Friday was purchased at The Meadowlands racetrack in New Jersey with a combination that cost $3,118.50, according to the Gulfstream Park website. The identity of the lucky ticket holder was not released.
