Grammy-winning DJ and producer Peter Rauhofer has died at the age of 48, after suffering complications relating to brain cancer.

The star passed away on Tuesday, less than three weeks after his manager revealed he was battling the disease.

A statement posted on Facebook by Rauhofer's representative reads: "Today the music industry has lost one of its true heroes. With a heavy heart I must now report that Peter Rauhofer has lost his battle with brain cancer...

"He is gone too soon, but we will always have the vast body of music that Peter left for us."

Rauhofer -- who also went by the stage names Club 69 and Size Queen -- was born in Vienna, but made his name in his adopted home of New York, remixing tracks by artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

His remix of Cher's smash hit "Believe" earned him a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Remixed Recording of the Year.

Paying tribute to Rauhofer, Scissor Sisters star Jake Shears writes on Twitter.com, "RIP Peter Rauhofer You will forever remain in my heart. Brought us so much joy for so many years. Devastating." Madonna also paid tribute to him on her Facebook page.
