Ahead of the opening of the Cannes market, Lionsgate has nabbed North American distribution rights to Hammer Films genre flick "The Quiet Ones," a supernatural thriller starring Jared Harris ("Mad Men," "Lincoln") and Sam Claflin ("Hunger Games: Catching Fire"). Lionsgate has booked an April 25, 2014 release date.
Writer-director John Pogue's second film, inspired by a true story, focuses on a controversial but charismatic professor (Harris) who takes his top students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy. Pogue directed "Quarantine 2: Terminal" after writing many thrillers.
"The Quiet Ones" was produced by Tobin Armbrust, President of Exclusive Media Worldwide Production and Acquisitions, and Simon Oakes, President and CEO of Hammer and Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media, along with James Gay-Rees, Steven Chester Prince and Ben Holden in association with The Travelling Picture Show Company (TPSC).
Lionsgate, which has seen success with the horror genre with such entries as the "Saw" series, "Cabin the Woods" and "Texas Chainsaw 3-D," had already picked up UK distribution rights to "The Quiet Ones" with plans to release theatrically in that territory.
Remaining international sales on "The Quiet Ones" will be handled at Cannes by Alex Walton, Exclusive Media’s President of International Sales and Distribution. Global financing, sales, production and distribution company Exclusive Media is run by Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Nigel Sinclair, Co-Chairman Guy East, Simon Oakes, Vice Chairman and President of Hammer and Marc Schipper, Chief Operating Officer. Exclusive Media has three labels: UK-based Hammer for genre titles, Spitfire Pictures for documentary features and Exclusive Media for all other feature film production. Exclusive Media has a co-development and co-production deal with Cross Creek Pictures, and also handles the international sales and servicing for theatrical feature films for Scott Pictures International (SPI).
Originally founded in 1934, legendary British film studio Hammer Films is famous for its classics "Dracula," "Frankenstein Created Woman," "One Million Years B.C." and "The Vampire Lovers." Since 2008, the company has been part of Exclusive Media, and returned to production with in 2010 with the release of Matt Reeves' "Let Me In," an adaptation of the Swedish "Let the Right One In" starring Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee. In 2011, Hammer released Antti Jokinen’s "The Resident" starring Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hammer legend Sir Christopher Lee, as well as David Keating's "Wake Wood," starring Aidan Gillen ("The wire," "Game of Thrones"), Eva Birthistle and Timothy Spall. February 2012 brought "The Woman In Black," starring Daniel Radcliffe, which has grossed over $130 million worldwide. The sequel "The Woman in Black: Angel of Death," which continues the story forty years on, will begin production in 2013, starring Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse").
