Jose Canseco is headed to the Metroplex.

The former Major League Baseball star will serve as a player/coach for the independent Fort Worth Cats for their first homestand of the year, which begins Thursday against Edinburg at LaGrave Field. Edinburg is managed by Jose Canseco’s brother Ozzie.

“I am excited to come to Fort Worth and mentor the young ballplayers,” Jose Canseco said in a statement. “I love Dallas/Fort Worth and I can’t wait to go up against Ozzie.”

Canseco will remain with the Cats for all seven games of their initial homestand.

The United League is a long way from the majors but it’s nothing new to Jose Canseco. He played for Laredo in 2010.

The admitted steroid user played for eight teams in the majors, making the All-Star team six times and winning American League Most Valuable Player honors in 1988 while with the Oakland Athletics.
