Fast and Furious 6 has lapped The Hangover 3 at the box office in their opening weekends, with the last Fast film making $158 million while the latest Hangover sequel netted about half that much. The numbers say that the public has had their fill of the dark comedy Hangover franchise after three installments but can’t get enough of the Fast & Furious car racing action movie franchise. That sentiment lines up with the producers’ sentiments as well, as it’s already been announced that Hangover 3 will be the last in the series while the ending of Fast and Furious 6 makes clear that moviemakers intend to deliver a Fast and Furious 7 to follow it up.

Each of the two movie franchises has had its ups and downs. The Fast and the Furious has produced six films as its original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker have come and gone and come back again. But after Tokyo Drift feeling like it would be the end of the road, a strong showing for Fast 5 made way for Fast and Furious 6 which has also performed strongly at the box office. The first Hangover movie was beloved, but the Hangover 2 was widely derided as being a rushed copycat of the original, making it somewhat surprising that the Hangover 3 was attempted at all.

Movie goers who failed to stick around for the final scene after the closing credits of Fast and Furious 6 this weekend may be wondering what all the fuss is about. But the scene, which – spoiler alert – depicts Han being apparently killed off, points to Fast and Furious 7 as being a revenge flick whether Han turns out to be alive or dead.
