The Calgary Flames wanted top draft prospect Seth Jones so badly that they were willing to part with all of their first round picks to get him.
Unfortunately, the Colorado Avalanche said no.
According to Elliote Friedman of CBC, the Avalanche turned down a trade offer from the Flames that would have netted them the sixth, 22nd, and 28th overall selections in the 2013 NHL Draft in exchange for giving up the top pick.
The Flames, who finished third-to-last in the Western Conference with 42 points last season, are officially in rebuild mode.
“I’ve been to therapy since the end of the season and it is a rebuild,” GM Jay Feaster told the Calgary Sun. “We are rebuilding.”
They may have mistaken “rebuilding” for “desperation,” because giving up all your first round picks to get one prospect would be a very risky move.
Granted, Jones is the best player in the draft, according to CBSSports’ latest big board, but wouldn’t drafting three solid prospects be better than selecting the top prospect who may or may not pan out?
That’s a fair question to ask, and I would take the first option. For a rebuilding team like the Flames, it would be best for them to grab several young players who they can develop for the future, instead of just one.
