Chinzo Machida did not disappoint in his Ressurection Fighting Alliance debut at RFA 11, as the karateka buried Brian Wood with a perfectly-timed flying knee. The event aired live on AXS TV from the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo.
With younger brother and former UFC champion Lyoto Machida in his corner, the 36-year-old defended all of Wood’s takedown attempts in the opening round while catching him from distance with round kicks and reverse punches to the body. Just after the 10-second clap sounded, Wood shot for another takedown and was met by Machida’s devastating flying knee, knocking him out instantly.
Wood was then surrounded for several minutes by medical personnel. Though he was moving and reportedly signaled with a thumbs up, according to broadcaster Ron Kruck, the featherweight was nevertheless taken from the cage on a stretcher.
Zach Makovsky captured the vacant RFA flyweight title on Friday night in the main event, cruising to a unanimous decision win over Matt Manzanares.
The former Bellator bantamweight champion scored his first single-leg takedown midway through the first period and never looked back, repeating the process many times over the course of his five-round battle with the three-time RFA vet.
Makovsky also threatened with submissions throughout the 25-minute bout, first fishing for an arm-triangle in round one and later looking for rear-naked chokes after taking Manzanares’ back in the second, third and fourth rounds. “Fun Size” also imposed his will in the final frame, hitting a trio of takedowns before using a kimura to pass to mount, securing his second victory of 2013.
In the co-main event, Brazilian prospect Raoni Barcelos improved his pro ledger to 7-0, putting forth a dominant effort against onetime UFC talent Tyler Toner. Barcelos left no doubt as to his superiority over the course of 15 minutes, repeatedly taking Toner to the canvas in the first two rounds and then flooring the American with a stinging left hook in the final period. Though Toner showed great resolve to survive the knockdown and the ensuing flurry of ground-and-pound, he nevertheless saw his opponent earn scores of 30-27 across the board in a unanimous decision verdict.
Lucas Rodolfo Bresolin Rota snatched a stunning knockout win over Vinnie Lopez in their middleweight affair, recovering from a trying first round to turn out Lopez’s lights in the second. Lopaz proved the more aggressive of the two fighters early, backing up Rota with hard punches as the Brazilian did his best to counter with low kicks.
