Florida man calls 911 when police detain him, reports a kidnapping

January 16, 2014 5:20 PM By Cora Van Olson

There are probably many ways of getting out of an arrest, but one surefire way to get yourself locked up in no time is to repeatedly call 911 saying that you are being kidnapped by police. 911 operators across the country, no doubt hope that Sean Slocum, 21, of West Palm Beach learned this valuable lesson Saturday.

According to the arrest affidavit, deputies were summoned to the Girafas Sports Grill on January 11, 2014, after getting a call about a fight in the bar. By the time they got there the fight was over, but an employee pointed out a man allegedly involved in the altercation still sitting in a car across the street.

Slocum was inside the car, but reportedly left the vehicle and started, causally no doubt, walking away when the cruiser approached. Deputies detained Slocum until they could corroborate whether or not he was the individual involved in the fight.

According to the affidavit, in the presence of deputies, Slocum then “made several false calls to 911 claiming that he was being kidnapped.” The operator explained that he was simply being detained in connection with police questioning, and was not in fact being kidnapped, or even arrested for that matter. Even so, “over a period of 10 or so [minutes] Sean called 911 about 4 times.”

That’s when they arrested him.

He was charged with misuse of 911 and released on is own recognizance the next morning .
