Child’s birthday party culminates in attempted murder

June 3, 2014 5:54 PM

Every year, Morgan Geiser, 12, was allowed to have two friends over for a birthday sleepover party. This year, Geiser allegedly suggested to her friend Anissa Weier, also 12, that they use the event as a cover to kill a third little girl from their class. The motive? Allegedly, to please anti-hero Slenderman from website Creepypasta.com, a fictional character whom they believe truly exists.

The party, scheduled for May 30, 2014, went fine, and the girls were tired enough after a fun night Skateland in Waukasha, Wisconsin, that they decided to put off the murder planned for 2 a.m. while the victim slept, and to instead kill her at the park the next day. They allegedly planned after the murder to walk the approximately 390 miles to the home of the malevolent Slenderman, whose mansion they believed was located in Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin.

Weier reportedly explained to police that “Slender,” as the suspects call him, is the “leader” of the Creepypasta universe, where one shows dedication by murder. The girls’ idea, allegedly, was to kill their classmate to prove their worthiness to Slenderman, while also proving to the world that he exists.

Once at the intended murder site, the girls were unable to go though with it, so they went to play hide-and-seek in a wooded area. The victim was allegedly told to lie face down on the ground while the other two hid. She complained about not being able to breath while Geiser and Weier allegedly screwed up their courage to act. Finally, as Weier reportedly told police, Weier said “now,” and Geiser and Weier attacked, tackling the victim and stabbing her 19 times as the victims screamed, ”I hate you! I trusted you!” By the time they were done with her she reportedly couldn’t breathe, see or walk.

All Geiser told police she remembered was a lot of screaming. That she thought Weier stabbed first and then handed her the knife, and that she continued to stab, but does not remember. Of the Slenderman, all she said was that he watches her, reads minds and teleports, and that she had never met him.

Weier, in her report to police, said that they then told the victim to lie still so she would bleed more slowly and that they would go to get help, but, she allegedly confessed, their real intention was to leave her there to die.

Both girls allegedly admit that what they did was “probably wrong.”

Her attackers gone, the victim managed to crawl out of the woods and on to a sidewalk where she was soon found by a passing cyclist. She was rushed to the hospital and, though she had to keep fighting for her life, was reported in stable condition Monday.

Geiser and Weier were found walking near I-94 in Waukesha, carrying a backpack with a a 5-inch blade in it. They are each being held on $500,000 bail and are being charged as adults — at least for now — with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. They were formally charged Monday, and each faces 65 years in prison.

Geiser’s family has expressed sadness and horror at their child’s alleged act, and her parents have apologized to the victim and her family through their attorney. Weier’s family has not yet made any comment to the press.

Investigators are checking into the girls’ family backgrounds to see if there was any indication the children were disturbed.
