PG County police tweet BOLO for bunny

June 11, 2014 4:37 PM By Cora Van Olson

Police in Prince George’s County Maryland have issued a Be On The Look Out for a stolen bunny costume and tweeted it. Most of the comments are what you’d expect, “Anyone check with Elmer Fud,” and “Just follow the wabbit twax” and “That’s all folks,” but one comment refers to the creepy local Bunny Man urban legend. Given the recent Slender Man stabbing, finding this “wascawy wabbit” might not be such a waste of time.

The sobering comment came from Jessica Kerry Mack: “Hope whoever stole it is not planning to do a bunnyman reenactment of some kind… ”

The Bunny Man legend finds its roots in two incidents apparently written up in the Washington Post in 1970, according to an article on Fairfax County’s official website. Essentially, the Bunny man goes around throwing his hatchet at people and threatening to bust them on the head with it. Urban legend has it that there was a real Bunny man serial killer, and that his ghost haunts the woods. Let’s hope there isn’t anyone out to prove that the Bunny Man really exists.

The first incident was reported on October 22, 1970:

“Man in Bunny Suit Sought in Fairfax
Fairfax County police said yesterday they are looking for a man who likes to wear “white bunny rabbit costume” and throw hatchets through car windows. Honest.”

The next was recorded on October 31, 1970:

“The ‘Rabbit’ Reappears
A man wearing a furry rabbit suit with two long ears appeared — again — on Guinea Road in Fairfax County Thursday night, police reported, this time wielding an ax and chopping away at a roof support on a new house.”

The tweet, PGPD Issues BOLO for Bunny, reads:

The PGPD is asking for our community’s help in finding the burglar who snatched a bunny costume. Please keep your eyes peeled for a 6′ gray and white furry bunny with pink ears and a pink nose.

Unfortunately, we aren’t joking. On June 6, 2014, patrol officers were called to the 4600 block of Calvert Road in College Park for a burglary. Employees discovered a storage shed had been broken into overnight. The only item taken was the costume.

Last week, we told you about how our officers helped a tortoise (http://************/p2wpojj ). Please help us rescue the hare now too.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Regional Investigation Division – Northern Region at (301) 699–2601.
