How Much Wrestling Is There at WrestleMania?

When Brock Lesnar squares off against Roman Reigns in the main event at WrestleMania 31 on Sunday, there will likely be body slams, takedowns and suplexes.

Recent Wall Street Journal studies found only about 11 minutes of action in an NFL game and about 18 minutes of action in a Major League Baseball game. So we wondered: How much actual wrestling is there at WrestleMania?

We put a stopwatch on the past four WrestleManias to time everything that happened during singles matches. The conclusion: only about nine minutes, 36 seconds, or 54%, of each match involves actual wrestling.

The other 46% of a match typically involves a whole lot of nothing. This includes stare downs, where on average it takes about 16 seconds for wrestlers to initially make contact when the bell rings. At last year’s WrestleMania, Daniel Bryan and Triple H took 76 seconds to start fighting.

But even when wrestlers are, well, wrestling, about 14% of the time (two minutes, 33 seconds), this involves someone placed in a submission hold. During the Bryan-Triple H match, holds took up six minutes, 55 seconds (or 27%,) of the 25 minute, 58 second match. This allowed Bryan to conserve energy as he wrestled another match later that night.

One of pro wrestling’s go-to-moves comes when both wrestlers are on the ground, struggling to get up or feigning unconsciousness. In the main event at WrestleMania 27, John Cena and The Miz both laid on the ground for 36% of the match, which resulted in a count-out disqualification.

This must have bored The Rock, who was serving as guest host for the event. He restarted the bout only to hit Cena with his “Rock Bottom” finishing move to end the match.
