The Chatham County Jail in Georgia was recently investigated by the Savannah Ghost Research Society after strange occurrences had been reported. The Chatham County Sheriff’s department plans to create a haunted house in October called “Panic in the Pen” at the jail which will act as a fundraiser for the Chatham County Youth Commission and the Wounded Warrior Project. While preparing for the haunted house exhibit, a worker there, Cory Harper said a metal plate weighing about 150 pounds fell from its latched position on the wall and was thrown across the room. Harper explained that the old jail has not been used to house long-term inmates since 1989, and says that he’s not yet convinced that the activity is really due to the spirits of the formerly imprisoned.

Before their investigation, group leader Ryan Dunn learned that there had been many hangings at the jail and stated,

“When you think of all the deaths here and the tragedy and all that energy — I think we’re going to see some really cool evidence.”

After walking through the jail, Dunn said that there was “definitely a heavy presence in here,” and, “You can feel it weighing on you.”

The team wanted to focus most of their attention on one particular cell, which Cory Harper said was used to house hardened criminals. Gena Bilbo, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said that the findings will be made public just before Halloween.
