England great Ron Greenwood dies at 84
London, England (Sports Network) - Ron Greenwood, England's former soccer manager, has died at the age of 84.

Greenwood was known throughout England for his service to the sport as a player and a manager.

In 1982, Greenwood managed England to the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Greenwood's years as a player didn't go unnoticed, spending time with Premiership's Chelsea, where he won a Championship medal in 1955, and Fulham clubs. Greenwood also spent time with Bradford Park Avenue and Brentford.

After retiring as a player in 1956, Greenwood went on to manage West Ham, bringing the club to a FA Cup win in 1964 and the European Winner's Cup in 1965.

In 1974, Greenwood went from the sidelines to the office, taking the team's general manager position.

Greenwood later took over as manager for England after the team had failed to qualify for the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. After taking charge, Greenwood managed to turn the club around, bringing them to the European championship in 1980 and the World Cup in 1982.

During the tournament, England got off to a good start, with wins over France, Czechoslovakia and Kuwait. The team was knocked out just before the semifinals due to draws against Spain and West Germany.

Following the tournament, Greenwood retired, opening the door for Bobby Robson to take over.

West Ham is expected to hold a moment of silence prior to their home match against Birmingham City on Monday.
